I have a glass-toped humi, so I check it pretty religiously, usually
twice a day. Today I was looking closely, with a flashlight, and saw
something that made my stomach drop: a tiny white creature scuttling
along the surface of my Cuaba Tradicionale. I took the cigar out for a
closer inspection and found 3 more of the little SOBs.

Happens to all of us at one time or another.
After you have bagged and frozen the cigars, don't forget to disinfect the
humidor. The little buggers can lurk in there, just waiting to get back to
lunch ...
Hatching, BTW, is not merely a matter of temperature; I suggest you check
humidity. This is far from scientific, but when I reduced humidity in my

Don't they freeze everything in the factory these days?

I thought all cigars from Cuba are now getting the freezer treatment ?
Anyone have info on this subject?

If they did, there'd be no beetle problem.

Yes and no.
[link]
So apparently all cuban cigars destined for export are frozen.
The original poster's beetles could originate from pre-2006 cuban
cigars, non-export cuban cigars or from non-cuban cigars.

I think Alex is correct. Certainly, if they are frozen in Cuba as claimed in
the article it probably eliminates the live bugs from the cigars. However,
if they were infested before being frozen, they would still have eaten holes

Or, which I consider not entirely improbable, they cut corners with the
freezing process (perhaps to save money). If the temperatures are not low
enough for long enough, the larvae will survive to eat another day.
Ironically, nicotine itself is a pesticide ....

My cigars have emerged from their deep freeze and are now resting in
my brand new, properly sealed and seasoned humidor. Without the
stogies, it was maintaining 70/70, so hopefully I'll be ok from now
on.
Gotta admit I didn't get much sleep this week worrying about my
lovelies in the freezer - and the fear of having this happen again...

If you feel confident enough to experiment, let the humidity come down to
67, or even 65. It's a matter of personal preference, of course, but a
great many of us find it increases flavour and smokeability.
Best of luck with your future purchases.
If you continue to be worried about beetle infestation, you may wish to

Actually, I kept my old humidor at 65 and yes, it made for a great
smoke. Think I'll let this one slide down then keep it there. And yes,
everything goes into the freezer first before the humidor from now on!
Oh, and what are people's feelings about post freezing waiting time?
How long til they're smokable? They seem quite dry and I'd guess at

I always freeze if I have any reason to think I should. Better safe
than sorry. After freezing, I usually wait at least one month, two if
I can. I'll pull one or two before freezing if they're something I
just can't wait to try.

If there are icicles, wait.
Mickey has it right -- four to six weeks is a minimum.
When I buy stuff for immediate consumption, I don't really bother with
freezing. It's simpler to quarantine such purchases in a separate humidor
(or tupperware container), I find.

I too freeze everything, but I don't seem to wait as long as others. I
usually wait at least 2 weeks, but have been known to only wait a few days.
I've not run a formal test, but anecdotally I have perceived no difference.
Maybe I'll take 5 well-known (to my palate) small cigars, put them through
a typical 5 day freeze, smoke with 24 hours of defrosting, then one a week

I did that for a few years after a couple of infestations.
I've gotten a little more lax now but still freeze most and keep an eye on
those that I don't for a period of time.

Demonick has the right idea. There's no substitute for testing.
However, the test has been done by ASCers, twice that I know of. The results
were that there was no perceptible difference between the cigars that had
not been frozen and those that had been, even for as long as a month.

I would like to participate in said test. Please feel free to send me 4
of the same Cuban cigars from at least 7 different manufacturers (or
the same manufacturer, but different sizes) [But not Coheba, I really
don't like them. I do on the other hand love the Cuaba Salamon] and I
will freeze then for 5 days and then smoke the first set and then each
